Hours - I spent looking at this image transporting me to another world. A world inhabited by urban mermaids making me want to dive amongst them and never come up for air again. Captivated I was, by this image and the soundtrack that came with it, as we are looking at the album cover of The Scream (1978) by Siouxsie & the Banshees, captivated I still am today.
As you can tell by my instagram photo-feed, I love blue and there is a fascination with water. Ever since I was a little girl, typically blue tiled swimming pools worked magic for me. Surprisingly, photographer Paul Wakefield seems to share a same sort of fascination for swimming pools, choosing a dark blue tiled pool with light blue lane stripes instead of the normal reverse colors for this scene.
What a wonderful chance that my daasmaaktmee subscribers challenge #daas&joy allows me the joy of diving into the making of this iconic image. An image for me a world in its own, up until now.
First I found out that the scene was inspired by a movie: The Swimmer (1968). And that the cover was to hold a contradiction between album title and image, since you cannot scream under water. That is brilliant! How come I never thought of that before?
The photographer, says that the brief was to shoot disquieting and unnerving images underwater in a swimming pool. He used school kids as models who pretty well ran riot. And I always wondered whether I was looking at some of the Banshees :/
On finding the right place to shoot the scene Paul says he scouted quite a few pools, but when he saw this one in the YMCA in Central London, dark blue tiled with light blue lane stripes, he knew it was the ideal location. And guess what: I believe that the pool is still there. Anyone up for a pilgrimage?
Despite any unnerving elements that started off the whole idea, to me the scene radiates joy and promise, paired to the dreamy blue backdrop of the pool. No matter how unnerving and divergent the details hiding behind the scene may be, never do they diminish the magic of this underwater world.
Well what a joyful start of a challenge that was!
